Did it myself. Not a big backyard (townhouse) though. Spent a whole day but turned out to be quite alright. Good way of saving some money.

It Really depends on how you want to do it, large amount of concreting should be done by professionals, but things like pavers/tiles, or turf, you should be able to handle by yourself. You'll need some tools to get the job done properly.
